The Top 5 Pilates Exercises to Get You Started!

Breathing:

Although simple - If you breath correctly, you will find it easy to relax and provide adequete oxygene to your muscles. You will notice the difference when you breathe correctly as it will enhance your overall experience. Breathing is a major part of all pilates exercises. You simply breathe in through your nose for a count of five, and out through your mouth for a count of 5, with a shushing sound. Make the breaths into short, rhythmic bursts - in,in,in,in,in and shush,shush,shush,shush,shush. Never rush your breathing and don't go overboard to the point that you feel light headed and fall over.

Toe Lifts:

This will help you with core balance. Core balance works in harmony with the alignment of your feet supporting your whole body. You will be amazed at how much strength your toes possess to balance your body. This movement strengthens the muscles on the top of your feet and increases the blood flow into your toes. Poor circulation to your feet can lead to stiff muscles and problems that affect the rest of your body.

This is a very simple exercise designed to improve circulation and enhance your awareness of balance.

Start standing with your feet together inlign with your body. Hold your head straight and keep your arms rested at your sides. Start simply by raising your right foot toes slowly up as far as they will go and then back down again. Do this a couple of times alternating feet.

Then lift up the toes of both feet at the same time pressing the metatarsal bones at the base of your toes strongly and evenly into the floor.

** Remember - Do not roll your feet inward or outward while performing the exercise. And do not lean back as you lift **

You should be breathing in as you lift, and breathing out as you lower your toes. Try closing your eyes as you exhale and lower your toes. Keep your eyes closed for five repetitions and you will notice an improvement in your sense of balance.

Finger Flicks:

This exercise improves the circulation in your arms and hands. The increased blood flow into the fingertips helps to flush out toxins and reduce arthritis or stiffness in the joints. It's also a good forearm workout and is excellent for relieving aching elbows.

Start standing with your feet together inlign with your body. Hold your hands down in front of you below your waist and make loose fists by rolling up your fingers with your thumb on top. In this exercise your arms should always be fully extended as they move in a circular motion into six main positions.

1. Down and in front. Hands facing inwards.

2. Raised to shoulder height and in front. Hands facing inward

3. Stretched straight up. Hands facing inward.

4. Stretched out to the sides. Hands facing upwards.

5. Lowered to 45 degrees. Hands facing down.

6. Lowered to sides. Hands facing inward.

The idea is to strongly flick your fingers open continually throughout all the positions. Do eight flicks while you stand in position 1 and four flicks as you move to position 2. Do eight flicks while standing in position 2 and four flicks as you move into position 3. Continue this pattern.

** Remember - Keep your wrists still and your arms straight **

The Hundred:

This is a classic pilates exercise so named because it takes a count of 100 to complete. This exercise strengthens core abdominal muscles and expands the chest and ribcage.

This is a floor or mat exercise. It involves raising your legs to vertical and waving or pulsing your arms up and down in small motions.

1. Start by lying on the floor with knees bent as if you were doing sit-ups and have your arms resting palm down at your side.

2. Squeeze your abdominal muscles so that your head, neck, and shoulders raise off the floor. Keep your abdominals squeezed tight throughout the whole exercise. Stretch your arms forward toward your toes and start pulsing them up and down a distance of about 15cm. Stay is this position for a count of 20.

3. Slowly lift your legs to a 90 degree angle with your body. Continue the pumping for a further count of 20.

4. Slowly extend your legs straight up to the ceiling and keep pumping for 20 counts.

5. Begin to lower your legs at a 45 degree diagonal to your torso and keep pumping for 20 counts.

6. Keep your legs straight and lower them as close to the ground as possible without lifting your spine off the floor and keep pumping for 20 counts.

7. Lower your head to the floor. Release your arms, bend your knees, and place your feet back on the floor.

Roll-up to Diamond:

This exercise works your abdominals and improves flexibility of your spine. This is a floor or mat exercise and involves rolling up your upper body while extending your arms.

1. Lie with your legs in the diamond position. Keep your back flat on the floor and rest your arms on the floor above your head. The diamond position is when you point your toes and bring your legs into a diamond shape with your knees out to the sides.

2. Lift your arms toward the ceiling and slowly start rolling or peeling your upper body off the floor from your head down.

3. Keep peeling and extend your legs forward while keeping your toes pointed.

4. Stretch your arms and torso forward over your legs creating a C shape with your body. Keep your abdominal muscles tight and hold your arms directly around your ears.

5. Begin to roll back down to the floor pulling your legs back into the diamond position. Your arms should start to point to the ceiling again.

6. Finish in the starting position with your spine flat on the floor, your hands resting above your head and your legs in the diamond position.

** Remember - Keep the movement fluid and constant. Work with your abdominal muscles. Don't straighten your spine while rolling. If you feel any stress or discomfort, hold on to your thighs until you are stronger. **

There is no magic pill to weight loss, and there is no single solution.  If you exercise like crazy, but have a terrible diet full of junk food and deep fat fry everything, then despite your exercise you probably won't make the weight you want.  Likewise, a great diet without exercise can only get you so far.  It takes a combination of factors, and both diet and exercise, to successfully lose some weight.

One of the most basic steps is to have a healthy diet.  There are fad diets to never eat meat, and other fad diets to always eat meat, but never eat carbs.  For most people the best way to go is to avoid the fad and gimmick diets and find something reasonable.  Making sure to eat all your fruits and vegetables each day is not only healthy, but it fills up your stomach with foods that are very light in calories and often have no fat at all.  For the same reason you should eat grains and fiber every day.  When it comes to meat, white is generally better than red.  If you can replace beef with chicken and pork with fish—do it!  The difference between those different meats are huge.

If you are a pop drinker, switch to water.  For many people that alone can equal twenty pounds in a year!  Suppose you drink two to three Cokes a day.  That is 600-750 calories, assuming you are drinking a can and not a larger bottle.  If you stop drinking pop, that is 4200 calories a week, and 16,800 a month you are not adding.  A pound is 3500 calories.  That means you prevent yourself from adding almost 5 pounds of calories a month just by switching to water.  You know what the bonus is?  Drinking ice cold water each day a actually burns 50-100 calories a day!  So at the end of the month, not only do you keep five pounds off, but burn another half a pound.  Water also flushes the system, and this does not even include the benefits from keeping all that sugar out of your system.

If you're not a big exercise person, start with a 30 minute walk every day.  A good thirty minute walk is 100-150 calories or more.  This can also help to raise your metabolism.  If you are willing to exercise a little harder, a stationary bike is a huge way to burn a large amount of calories in a short time.

Also, though many people's schedules don't allow for it, see if you can eat five or six really small meals instead of two or three large ones.  Your body generally can't burn more than 500 calories at any meal setting, so smaller meals not only puts less calories right into storage, but keeps the metabolism up and burning over the whole day.

Mind all the details, keep all these little hints in mind, and you might be amazed at the weight you start dropping with what seems like barely any effort at all.

The benefit of yoga is twofold - increased health and unification of the spirit with the body.  It is accomplished through the use of many different aspects, but mainly through the combination of Asanas, or postures, and breathing/meditation practices.

This raises many question in the Christian community.  In my research for this article, I was very surprised at the viewpoint of the Christian apologists, and their take on yoga and its practice.  I have hesitated on writing this article  because of that viewpoint.  However, I feel that this question and the stance of the Christian community warrants reflection on the subject.

Yoga has a history dating back over five thousand years, to the beginning of the civilization of man.  Little is really known about Yoga.  it is believed to have originated in Mehrgarh, a neolithic settlement in what is now Afghanistan.  Scholars believe it has grown out of Stone Age Shamanism. In this early period of civilization's beginnings, Yoga was a community resource, because of its attempts to determine cosmic order through inner vision, and apply it to daily living.  In later years, yoga evolved into an inner dialogue through which the Yogis sought to develop their own salvation and enlightenment.

Archaeological evidence of the existence of Yoga first appeared in stone seals excavated from the Indus valley.  It depicted figures in many Yogic Asanas, or postures, and officially put Yoga in the time period of approximately 3000 B.C.  Of greater import, it also linked yoga to the great Indus-Sarasvati Civilization, a period in time that was considered modern and efficient.

From the Indus-Sarasvati civilization came the ancient texts known as the Vedas, the oldest scriptures in the world. The Vedas are a collection of hymns that praise a higher power and contains the oldest recorded history of Yoga teachings.  The Vedas required the practitioner to transcend human limitations, and reach a higher spiritual plane.  In later years, texts known as the Brahmanas were written to explain the rituals and the hymns of the Vedas. Following this came the Aranyakas texts, which outlined the practice of Yogis living in the seclusion of the forest.  This led to the beginning of India's medical tradition, known as Ayurveda.  All in all, Yoga transformed into a practice of health, harmony of the spirit, and a way of life.

The Christian viewpoint is thus - if one opens the mind to clearer thinking and inner vision, they open the spirit to demonic possession.  It is felt that Yoga practice borders on occultism, and that opening one's mind and spirit to the benefit of yoga is both dangerous and against everything Christianity preaches. Christians believe that studying yoga is akin to practicing Hinduism, and one cannot separate the philosophy of Hinduism from their Christian beliefs, regardless of the health benefit of yoga.

As a practicing Buddhist, I take issue with this viewpoint.  To me, this smacks of tunnel vision and narrowmindedness.  A Christian is expected to open their heart and minds to Jesus, and to give in to the spirit of the Lord.  They are expected to rely on blind faith, and to accept the word of God as the only truth in the world. A thinking person would find this hypocritical, for on the one hand Christians preach that Yoga must be avoided because opening the mind to clearer vision encourages the possibility of demonic possession, yet on the other hand preaches that one must open the mind and heart to accept Jesus into their lives. Opening one's heart and mind is exactly that - whether it is to look into one's self, or to accept Jesus into their lives.  If, as Christians preach, we are open to demonic possession if we look inside ourselves and open the mind to all the possibilities, how then can we safely open our hearts to the concept of Christianity?  Is there a gatekeeper who makes this decision when we do so that determines what path we are to follow?  I think not...

For the record, I was raised in a Christian household.  My father was the deacon of a small Baptist church in the farming community where we lived.  My mother, who taught us children to question everything, moved from the Baptist community to the Assembly of God churches, and was ostracized by my father.  I think that to her dying day, she resented my father for this narrowmindedness.  Life is a matter of choice, and my mother believed that we are not required to operate under the illusion of blind faith, but to do what is right to us as an individual.  And it is why I walk the Noble 8 Folded Path.  It is simply a matter of choice, and questioning everything in this universe.

I believe that the practice of yoga is a good thing.  It provides us with great health benefits, clearer vision, and harmony in our souls.  And in this day and age, what else is there? Whether we be Christians, Muslims, or Buddhists, we must not disrespect the feelings and thoughts of others, their rights to practice as they wish, or try to push our views down other people's throats.  To live in harmony is exactly that...
